Social sandbox where you build games and worlds with friends

Rec Room is a lively social hub and creation toolkit rolled into one, blurring the line between game and platform. At its core, it’s a massive collection of user-made rooms, mini games and hangout spaces, all tied together by approachable tools that let you design your own experiences without needing to be a programmer.

You start by customizing a cartoony avatar and your private dorm room, which immediately sets the playful tone. From there, you can jump into featured rooms such as competitive shooters, obstacle courses, co-op quests or chill lounges. The variety is the real highlight: one moment you’re playing paintball or dodgeball, the next you’re exploring an eerie horror map someone cobbled together with surprising creativity.

Creation is handled through Rec Room’s in-game tools, notably the Maker Pen, which lets you build objects, decorate spaces and even hook up basic logic. Everything happens in real time, so friends can join and co-create alongside you. It’s surprisingly intuitive for newcomers, yet deep enough that dedicated creators can craft elaborate levels and full game modes.

Social features are front and center: voice chat, emotes and easy room browsing make it simple to meet new people and discover fresh content. There are solid safety and reporting tools, but as with any open community, you may occasionally encounter trolls or low-effort rooms amid the gems.

Performance is generally smooth, though busy rooms with lots of objects or players can cause frame drops on weaker devices, and the interface can feel dense until you get used to it. There are optional purchases for cosmetics and extras, but you can enjoy a huge amount of content without spending money.

For anyone who loves user-generated content, social play and creative tools, Rec Room is a powerful and endlessly replayable playground.
