Limbus Company
Stylish turn based battles meet a twisted urban fantasy
Limbus Company is a dark, story-driven gacha RPG that fuses cerebral strategy with chaotic real-time action. Set in Project Moon’s signature dystopian city, it casts you as the Executive Manager of a bus full of damaged “Sinners” diving into nightmarish corporate ruins in search of the mysterious Golden Boughs.
Combat is where the game stands out. Each round is turn-based in planning, but plays out in simultaneous real-time clashes. You link skill icons on a grid, then watch characters collide as the system compares values and effects to determine whose attack wins. This Clash mechanic makes every turn feel like a tense puzzle: you must read enemy intents, prioritize matchups, and decide when to gamble on a risky roll.
The Identity and E.G.O system adds another layer of depth. Each Sinner has multiple alternate versions with different roles, affinities, and passive bonuses. Combining them with powerful, often self-destructive E.G.O gear creates complex team synergies tailored to specific enemy weaknesses, especially in the boss-like Abnormality fights that demand pattern recognition and careful resource management.
Presentation is excellent. The art direction leans into grimy, surreal horror with slick 2D animation, while the soundtrack blends industrial and jazz influences to match the oppressive setting. The narrative is dense, lore-heavy, and often brutal, but fans of Lobotomy Corporation and Library of Ruina will appreciate how it expands the universe with sharp writing and memorable character banter.
On the downside, the interface can feel busy at first, and the layered mechanics plus gacha progression create a learning curve and some grind. However, for players who enjoy deep, experimental RPG systems wrapped in a uniquely unsettling world, Limbus Company offers a rich, rewarding experience that only gets better as you master its rhythms.
