Street Kungfu
Retro street brawling with slick combos and simple controls
Street Kungfu: King Fight is a throwback to classic side‑scrolling brawlers, dressed up with modern touch controls and a chunky comic‑book art style. It aims to recreate the thrill of 90s arcade beat ’em ups, and for the most part, it succeeds.
You play as one of several fighters, each with a distinct flavor: a kung fu master, a pro‑wrestling bruiser, a boxer, a ninja, and more. The roster isn’t huge, but the movesets feel different enough to encourage experimentation. Light and heavy attacks, jumps and directional inputs can be chained into satisfying combos, and unlocking new skills gradually broadens what each character can do.
The premise is pure arcade melodrama: your friend is kidnapped, and you plow through gangs and bosses across a series of urban stages to rescue them. Levels are straightforward but varied, with breakable crates hiding weapons and coins. Cash can be spent to upgrade stats, unlock abilities, and improve survivability, which gives a nice sense of progression beyond simply clearing stages.
Controls are intentionally simple: a virtual stick and a few buttons handle movement, attacks, and specials. Response is generally snappy, and the game is forgiving enough that even newcomers to beat ’em ups can quickly start pulling off cool-looking moves. Veterans may find the enemy AI and stage design a bit repetitive over longer sessions, though the inclusion of different modes and time‑limited events helps break the monotony.
Visually, Street Kungfu goes for bold colors and exaggerated animations rather than realism, and it fits the over‑the‑top action perfectly. Punches and kicks land with satisfying impact, and special skills are flashy without becoming cluttered.
If you enjoy old‑school scrolling fighters and want a straightforward, no‑nonsense brawler with light RPG elements, Street Kungfu: King Fight is an entertaining pick, even if it doesn’t reinvent the genre.
