Azur Lane
Azur Lane blends naval strategy with stylish anime action
Azur Lane is a surprisingly deep fusion of side-scrolling shooter, RPG, and light strategy wrapped in an eye-catching anime aesthetic. You command a fleet of anthropomorphized warships—each represented as a distinct “shipgirl”—and send them into hectic 2D battles that feel both accessible and satisfying.
Combat is real-time and fast-paced. You control the vanguard ships by dragging them across the screen to dodge enemy fire while your backline launches barrages and airstrikes on cooldown. It’s easy to pick up, yet positioning, timing, and team composition quickly become crucial at higher difficulties. You can switch to auto-battle for routine grinding, which is handy, though manual play remains more effective for tough encounters.
Where Azur Lane truly shines is in its collection and customization systems. With more than 300 ships, each with unique stats, skills, and personalities, building the perfect flotilla is endlessly engaging. Upgrading equipment, enhancing stats, and unlocking affection bonuses provide a steady sense of progression. The Live2D interactions for selected characters add an extra layer of polish and personality.
Presentation is consistently strong. Character art is detailed, attack animations feel impactful, and the soundtrack suits the naval warfare theme well. The story is serviceable, leaning heavily on character-driven scenes and playful banter rather than complex plotting.
On the downside, the gacha-style ship acquisition and resource grinding may feel repetitive over time, especially for those chasing specific rare units. Menus can also feel crowded for newcomers. Still, for players who enjoy collecting, tinkering with builds, and anime-inspired action, Azur Lane offers a generous, content-rich experience that’s easy to sink hours into.
