GPS Test
Precise GPS diagnostics and navigation data in your pocket
GPS Test is a compact yet remarkably powerful toolkit for anyone who relies on satellite positioning, whether for hiking, driving, fieldwork, or just satisfying a bit of geo-geek curiosity. Instead of simply showing a dot on a map, it exposes exactly what your receiver is doing and how well it is performing.
The app’s six dedicated screens are thoughtfully laid out. The signal bar chart view gives a clear, color-coded breakdown of satellite strength, accuracy and lock status across major constellations including GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, BEIDOU, SBAS and QZSS. Switch to the sky view and you get a rotating polar plot showing where each satellite sits above the horizon, which is ideal for diagnosing poor reception in urban canyons or dense forests.
Beyond diagnostics, GPS Test doubles as a practical navigation companion. It displays speed, heading and altitude in clean text, plus an excellent time screen that pulls precise UTC from satellites alongside local time, sunrise, sunset and daylight length. There’s even moon phase info, a classic compass view, and a world map overlay with a day/night curve and sun position—features outdoor enthusiasts and photographers will particularly appreciate.
Support for multiple coordinate grids (OSGB, UTM, MGRS, USNG, CH1903, Maidenhead) and numerous datums makes it especially attractive to surveyors, radio amateurs and professionals working with specialized maps. Customizable color schemes, including an effective night mode, help the app blend with cockpit or dashboard instruments and reduce eye strain after dark.
On the downside, the interface is function-first and can feel dense for absolute beginners. However, once you understand what each screen offers, GPS Test becomes an indispensable, low-overhead way to verify, fine-tune and truly understand your device’s positioning capabilities.
