Adorable screen buddies that liven up your device

Shimeji: Screen Buddies turns an ordinary screen into a playful desktop, filling it with tiny animated mascots that roam, climb, and bounce around whatever you’re doing. It’s a lighthearted personalization tool that feels more like a toy than a utility, and that’s exactly its charm.

The core idea is simple but surprisingly polished. You can run up to six mascots at once, pick them up, toss them around, or watch them interact with each other as they patrol your screen. Tap and double-tap gestures let you quickly hide, freeze, or switch characters, and a handy live preview makes it easy to fine-tune their size and animation speed so they never feel too intrusive.

A standout strength is performance. Despite the constant motion, Shimeji is impressively smooth and remains gentle on battery life, even with multiple mascots active. The “Ghost Mode” is a smart touch: mascots stay visible but stop responding to touches, so they won’t interfere while gaming, typing, or scrolling.

Right now, the biggest drawback is the temporarily reduced mascot library. Due to the removal of third‑party IP and user-submitted characters, you’re limited to the original Super Shimeji collection. The good news is that these new high‑resolution mascots look crisp and expressive, with 512×512 animations and more visual polish than older designs. You can also experiment with the built-in editor to create custom characters, though it takes a bit of patience to master.

Shimeji is not a productivity tool, and it can be distracting if you already struggle to focus. But if you enjoy visual customization and want your screen to feel more alive, it’s a delightful, well-optimized companion that adds personality without feeling like bloat.
