Unpacking is an unusually soothing puzzle game that transforms the mundane task of emptying boxes into a heartfelt storytelling experience. Across eight different moves, you’ll carefully place books, toys, clothes, kitchenware, and tiny personal trinkets into a series of evolving homes, gradually piecing together the life of an unseen character.

The core gameplay is deceptively simple: tap a box, pull out an item, and find a fitting spot for it in the room. Some objects have logical “correct” places, while others offer more freedom, letting you subtly express your own sense of order and style. There are no timers, scores, or penalties for taking your time, which makes each session feel calm and contemplative rather than stressful.

Where Unpacking truly shines is in its environmental storytelling. You never read dialogue or see cutscenes, yet the character’s journey is crystal clear through what she keeps, what changes, and what disappears between moves. A battered plush toy surviving every house, a diploma finally finding a place of pride, or a forgotten item left behind can say more than a page of text.

Presentation is top-notch. The pixel art is charming, richly detailed, and full of tiny visual jokes, while the sound design makes every object satisfying to place, from the clink of dishes to the rustle of clothing. The BAFTA-winning soundtrack by Jeff van Dyck perfectly matches the zen tone, gently guiding the emotional arc without overshadowing it.

If you crave fast action or deep mechanical complexity, Unpacking may feel too slow or straightforward. But as a relaxing, narrative-driven puzzle experience that encourages mindfulness and observation, it’s exceptional—and remarkably moving.
