Last Fortress
Command survivors in a rich underground zombie strategy game
Last Fortress drops you into a crumbling world where humanity’s last hope lies beneath the surface, and it blends base management, strategy, and light RPG elements into a surprisingly engrossing package. You play as the Commander of a ragtag band of survivors who discover an abandoned underground facility and slowly turn it into a sprawling stronghold.
The shelter-building layer is the game’s strongest point. Carving out new rooms, setting up power generators, research labs, and mission control centers feels genuinely satisfying, especially as you optimize layouts to keep resources flowing. There’s a pleasing sense of progression as bare tunnels evolve into a buzzing subterranean city.
Heroes and survivors add depth beyond simple resource numbers. Each character comes with specific life skills—chefs boost the canteen, engineers improve production, soldiers dominate in combat. Assigning the right people to the right jobs, then forming combat squads with effective ability synergies, gives battles more strategy than the usual “send everyone and hope” approach.
Outside the fortress, expeditions into the wasteland offer constant goals: scavenging runs, zombie-clearing missions, and forward camps that extend your influence. Alliances are also central, letting you team up to speed research, coordinate attacks, and defend against threats on the world map.
On the downside, timers and resource gates become quite noticeable as you advance, and hero recruitment leans heavily into gacha mechanics. Progress remains possible without paying, but patience is required, especially for late-game upgrades.
Overall, Last Fortress is a polished, content-rich survival strategy game with an addictive base-building loop and a strong sense of community play. If you enjoy managing every aspect of a post-apocalyptic stronghold while leading heroes into tactical encounters, this is well worth sinking time into.
