KOF'98 UM OL reimagines the legendary fighting series as a team-based RPG brawler, blending fast-paced action with long-term character progression. Rather than one-on-one duels, you build a squad of six core fighters plus three support characters, then unleash signature KOF specials through a tap-and-timing combo system.

Battles revolve around QTE combos: skills trigger automatically, but well-timed taps extend chains, boost damage, and activate iconic moves like Maiden Masher or Haoh Shoko Ken. It is simple to pick up yet surprisingly technical when you start optimizing rotations and synergy between characters.

The roster is the game’s biggest draw. With over 150 fighters to collect, from classics like Kyo and Iori to alternate and EX variants, team-building becomes a deep puzzle. RPG mechanics let you level up heroes, enhance gear, unlock passive abilities and awaken hidden power, giving a satisfying sense of growth over time.

Content is generous. A story campaign loosely follows the original KOF ‘98 arc, while extra PvE modes, boss challenges and limited-time events keep you busy. Competitive players can dive into multiple PvP formats and cross-server tournaments, where coordination and investment in your team really show.

Nostalgia is handled with care. Original Japanese voices, familiar sound effects and faithfully recreated arenas instantly evoke the arcade days, and the presentation is slick despite the age of the underlying assets.

On the downside, progression is heavily tied to gacha-style recruitment and resources, so free players may feel the grind and a power gap in high-end PvP. Interface menus can also feel cluttered with currencies, events and upgrade tabs.
