Fast paced Sonic sequel with classic 2D speed and co op

Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode II is a confident return to side‑scrolling speed, blending old‑school momentum with a modern presentation and a welcome focus on tag‑team play. It picks up directly after Episode I, but feels more polished and substantial in almost every respect.

The heart of the game lies in its five Zones, each split into multiple acts and capped with inventive boss battles. Visuals are bright and detailed, with parallax backgrounds and smooth animations that make loops, corkscrews, and chutes feel wonderfully kinetic. Jun Senoue’s soundtrack leans into bouncy, energetic tracks that fit the pace perfectly, even if a few tunes aren’t quite as iconic as the 16‑bit classics.

A major highlight is the Sonic and Tails teamwork mechanic. With a tap, you can trigger synchronized moves: midair boosts for huge jumps, rolling attacks that shred enemies, or tag‑team flight to reach hidden routes. These abilities add welcome variety and encourage experimentation within stages.

Controls are responsive with a physical controller, and the inclusion of cloud saves and leaderboards gives it a more complete, modern package. Touch controls work reasonably well for casual play, but at higher speeds they can feel a bit imprecise, especially during precision platforming or boss patterns.

Episode Metal, unlocked from the start, is a tough bonus campaign that reimagines stages from Episode I. Playing as Metal Sonic in these remixed, more punishing levels adds challenge and valuable lore context for fans who care about the series’ story.

The adventure is not especially long, and level design sometimes prioritizes spectacle over exploration, but Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode II still delivers a satisfying burst of classic 2D Sonic action with enough extras to keep fans coming back for better times and higher scores.
