Relive thousands of arcade classics with flexible controls

MAME4droid (0.139u1) is a powerful arcade emulator tailored for those who want an experience close to the original cabinets. Built on the PC MAME 0.139 codebase, it focuses firmly on accuracy and compatibility, supporting over 8000 ROMs from a huge range of machines and eras.

The first thing you notice is how configurable it is. There’s native support for devices like the NVidia Shield Portable and Tablet, complete with hardware key remapping, so you can define your own layouts for each game. If you prefer on-screen input, the touch controller can be toggled on and off and adjusted to suit your play style, making even twitchy shooters and fighters manageable.

Video options are another highlight. MAME4droid offers image smoothing, including HQx filters up to HQ4x, which can significantly clean up chunky pixel art on high-resolution screens. For purists, integer-based scaling keeps original aspect ratios intact, while overlay filters add that nostalgic arcade-screen feel.

Performance, however, depends heavily on your hardware. Because it’s based on a demanding PC build, it really expects at least a dual-core processor, and even then some 90s titles—such as Mortal Kombat or OutRun—may struggle to hit full speed. Not every game will run perfectly, and some may not run at all, which is an inherent limitation of the enormous catalog it attempts to support.

It’s also important to note that MAME4droid includes no games; you must provide your own legally obtained ROMs that match the 0.139 romset. Once set up, though, it becomes a remarkably complete arcade hub, rewarding patient tinkerers with an authentic and flexible way to revisit coin-op history.
