Carnivores: Ice Age
Stalk prehistoric beasts in a tense open world ice safari
Carnivores: Ice Age is a first person hunting simulation that swaps modern forests for a frozen, prehistoric wilderness filled with saber-toothed tigers, woolly rhinos and other long-extinct beasts. Rather than an arcade shooter, it aims for a slower, more methodical experience where planning is as important as pulling the trigger.
The core appeal lies in its large, open 3D maps. Five distinct icy locations invite you to pick a spot, study animal tracks and patiently stalk your prey. There’s no time limit pushing you forward, so each hunt feels like a self-contained expedition, complete with tense moments hiding behind rocks or in tall grass while a predator sniffs the air nearby.
Hunting gear adds welcome depth. Camouflage, cover scent and a radar-style device can make the difference between a clean shot and becoming dinner yourself. Paying attention to wind direction and noise is crucial, and the relatively smart animal AI reinforces that: creatures will flee, circle around, or outright charge you if they catch your scent or hear a misstep.
Visually, Carnivores: Ice Age delivers solid HD graphics, with detailed models for the animals and atmospheric snow-covered landscapes. Performance is generally stable, though the draw distance and textures can look a little dated compared to newer titles.
Progression is driven by trophies: successful hunts fill an interactive trophy room and unlock tougher species and new weapons. It’s satisfying, but some players may find the early grind a bit slow, and the methodical pacing won’t suit anyone looking for fast, constant action.
For fans of hunting sims and those nostalgic for the classic PC original, Carnivores: Ice Age offers a surprisingly deep and replayable prehistoric safari that rewards patience, stealth and careful aim.
