Metal Slug: Awakening is a modern take on the legendary run-and-gun shooter that aims to please both nostalgic veterans and new players. It preserves the side-scrolling, bullet-dodging arcade core while layering on fresher systems, richer content, and a glossy visual overhaul.

Classic stages such as the desert, pyramid and mine are faithfully recreated, now rendered in sharp, colorful 2.5D graphics with smooth animations and flashy effects. The game nails the signature Metal Slug feel: screen-filling explosions, goofy enemy designs, and that satisfying pop when a well-placed grenade clears a mob.

Controls are responsive, with a virtual joystick and auto-fire options that keep the chaos manageable, although the interface can feel crowded, especially during intense boss fights. The variety of modes is a real strength: beyond the main campaign, you get World Exploration, three-player squad missions, and a roguelike mode that constantly reshuffles upgrades and challenges. Co-op stages and boss battles are a highlight, turning the frantic action into a shared spectacle.

Progression leans into collection and customization. There’s a broad arsenal of weapons, diverse heroes with unique skills, and iconic vehicles to unlock and upgrade. However, the economy is clearly tuned for long-term grinding, and the monetization—random draws for top-tier gear and characters—may frustrate players who dislike gacha-style systems.

Metal Slug: Awakening excels when it sticks closest to its roots: fast, precise shooting, inventive level design, and over-the-top set pieces. If you can tolerate some grind and a heavily featured cash shop, it offers one of the most faithful and energetic revivals of the classic arcade experience currently available.
