Age of Strategy
Deep retro strategy with hundreds of challenging battles
Age of Strategy is a love letter to classic turn-based tactics, trading flashy graphics for a staggering amount of content and depth. If you grew up on grid-based war games and care more about unit stats than particle effects, this is very much your territory.
The first thing you’ll notice is the unapologetically old-school presentation. Sprites are simple, animations minimal, and menus dense. Yet behind this 16-bit façade lies an enormous strategy sandbox: over 500 campaign maps, 140+ skirmish scenarios, and more than 350 units and buildings spanning knights, vikings, samurai, Templars and more. Historical battles like Troy sit alongside fantasy-flavored clashes, giving you plenty of variety in both setting and tactics.
Progression is driven by a star-based reward system. Perform well in scenarios to earn gems, which unlock new troops, buildings and over 120 technologies. There are also single-use spell boosts to soften particularly brutal missions, though they never feel like a shortcut to victory—planning and positioning still rule. Crucially, this is not pay to win: purchases are framed as donations, so your success depends entirely on skill and persistence.
Multiplayer options are generous, ranging from AI skirmishes to online battles with or against other players. A built-in map editor (still in beta) lets you craft and share your own challenges, extending the life of the game even further.
The flip side of all this depth is a steep learning curve and a clunky interface by modern standards. Newcomers to the genre may feel overwhelmed, and the lack of visual polish can be off-putting. But for strategy purists who value mechanics over presentation, Age of Strategy is a richly rewarding, endlessly replayable war chest.
