Open Camera
Powerful pro camera controls in a clean ad free package
Open Camera is a feature-packed photography tool that feels tailor‑made for users who want more control than the stock camera offers. Despite being completely free and ad‑free, it delivers an impressive array of options usually reserved for premium software.
The interface is functional rather than flashy, but once you get your bearings it reveals a deep toolkit. You can tweak scene modes, white balance, ISO, exposure compensation, and even lock exposure when needed. Support for Camera2 API on compatible devices unlocks full manual controls, RAW (DNG) capture, burst shooting, slow motion and even a flat log profile for more flexible video grading.
Shooting aids are where Open Camera truly shines. Auto-leveling keeps horizons straight, while optional grids, crop guides, histogram, zebra stripes and focus peaking help nail composition and exposure. HDR with auto-alignment and ghost removal, exposure bracketing and a dedicated noise reduction/night mode make it easier to handle tricky lighting.
There are plenty of thoughtful extras: timers with voice countdown, auto-repeat shooting, and even the ability to trigger a photo by making a noise. Volume buttons can be remapped, the UI is highly configurable, and there is an upside‑down preview mode for use with attachable lenses.
For metadata and documentation enthusiasts, Open Camera can geotag photos and videos (including compass direction), stamp images with time, coordinates and custom text, and save video subtitles in SRT format. It also includes an option to strip EXIF data for privacy-conscious users.
The wealth of options can feel intimidating at first, and some features depend on your device’s hardware. The design is utilitarian rather than modern. Still, for photographers who value flexibility, transparency and zero ads, Open Camera is one of the most compelling choices available.
