Worldwide amateur radio contacts in your pocket

EchoLink brings the global EchoLink network to your handheld device, turning it into a surprisingly capable tool for licensed amateur radio operators who want to stay active on the go. It essentially lets you link to repeaters, conference servers and individual stations worldwide using standard data connections, making it ideal for travelers, apartment dwellers, or anyone with antenna restrictions.

The interface is straightforward and very much “radio first”: a callsign list, node search, and a large Push‑to‑Talk button dominate the screen. It won’t win design awards, but it’s clear, responsive, and easy to navigate even on smaller screens. Searching for nodes by callsign, node number, or location is quick, and adding frequently used stations to Favorites keeps regular contacts just a tap away.

Audio quality is generally excellent, limited more by your network than the app itself. Over Wi‑Fi or a solid 4G/LTE connection, voice comes through cleanly with minimal delay, and the app handles long QSOs without overheating or crashing. Background operation is also solid: you can keep monitoring while the screen is off, which feels very natural for radio use.

On the downside, new users must already be licensed and validated, and the initial configuration can confuse anyone expecting a casual voice chat tool. The interface, while functional, looks dated, and there are few advanced convenience features such as integrated logging or automatic recording.

Overall, EchoLink is a must‑have utility for active hams who rely on the EchoLink system. It’s not a toy, and it doesn’t try to be. For serious operators wanting reliable, worldwide access to repeaters and conference rooms from wherever they are, this app delivers exactly what it promises.
