Kodi
Turn your device into a powerful home theater hub
Kodi is a feature-packed media center that transforms your device into a full-fledged entertainment hub, with a focus on flexibility and control. Built as free and open source software, it shines when managing large libraries of movies, shows, music, and photos from a wide range of local and network sources.
The interface is inspired by living-room setups: big, bold menus, clear artwork, and navigation that works excellently with a remote. The default Estuary skin is clean and responsive, letting you browse by genre, year, actors, or playlists with ease. On larger phones and tablets, the Estouchy skin adapts controls and layouts so browsing feels comfortable even from the couch.
Kodi’s real strength lies in its extensibility. A rich ecosystem of add-ons allows you to pull in metadata, artwork, subtitles, internet radio, podcasts, and legally available online streams. Playback is robust, with support for numerous video and audio formats, making it a strong choice for anyone with a mixed-format collection on NAS drives, external storage, or shared folders.
It is important to note that Kodi does not ship with any media; you must supply your own content or choose third-party plug-ins that access legitimate, free sources. The project explicitly distances itself from pirated or paid content offered illegally.
There is a learning curve, especially when diving into advanced settings, add-on management, or library scraping. On very small screens, the experience is also less than ideal, and on weaker hardware, heavy skins or demanding add-ons can affect performance.
For users willing to invest a bit of time, however, Kodi offers an exceptionally powerful and customizable media experience that can rival dedicated set-top boxes.
