Real time safety alerts and live incident updates nearby

Citizen turns your surroundings into a live safety dashboard, pushing real-time alerts about emergencies, crime, fires, natural disasters and protests happening close to you. It combines official radio dispatches with community reports and live video, so you can quickly understand what is happening and decide how to respond.

The centerpiece is the incident feed, which updates in near real time as new events are detected. Each alert includes a map, distance from your location and short descriptions that are usually easy to skim at a glance. When available, live video streams from people on the scene add crucial context that a text alert alone can’t provide, helping you judge how serious a situation really is.

Citizen’s Safety Map and friend features push it beyond a simple scanner-style tool. You can see whether friends are near an unfolding incident and check their status, while Ghost Mode lets you temporarily hide your own location. This balance between awareness and privacy is welcome, though it does rely on users regularly managing their settings.

The optional Protect subscription layers on access to a professional agent who can monitor you during stressful situations and coordinate help if needed. It’s a compelling safety net, but also the part of the app that feels most like a premium upsell.

Citizen is not perfect: coverage is best in major US cities, some user-generated reports can be noisy or incomplete, and a constant flow of alerts may feel overwhelming or anxiety-inducing if you are sensitive to bad news. Used thoughtfully, however, it’s a powerful tool for staying informed, avoiding danger and looking out for loved ones in an unpredictable world.
